Character Background

• Core Relationships: 1.) Soya Yomotsuki. Ruka's father who was a mask-maker. Ruka loved him dearly and always wanted to play with him/spend time with him, but Soya began to neglect and ignore Ruka as he became more and more obsessed with making the perfect mask. He would force Ruka to wear masks, which scared her and caused her to feel like she was being possessed. She very rarely ever saw her father's face mask-less, and he caused her to develop the Moonlight Syndrome.

Sayaka Minazuki: Ruka's mother. A descendent of the Tsukimori Maidens. Despite the tradition dying at, Sayaka took her role as one seriously. She was traditional and caring, teaching Ruka music and passing down the lunar melody to her. Sayaka tried to keep the family together, but she sent Ruka of the hospital once she got Moonlight Syndrome, and is the one who hired Choshiro to find her. Afterwards, she immediately left the island behind for Ruka's safety. Despite her warnings, Ruka traveled back to the island sometime after she passed on.

Yo Haibara: The son of the director of the hospital Ruka was in. Yo wanted to attempt the Rite of Descent using his sister as the main dancer. To do so, he needed 5 young girls to act as the instrumentalists. He kidnapped these girls to make them do the ritual; Ruka was among them. When the ritual failed, all of the girls passed out and had their memories erased. This forever changed Ruka, as she couldn't recall anything of her past.

Misaki, Madoka, Tomoe, & Marie: The other girls kidnapped with Ruka. Marie & Tomoe died from the Moonlight Syndrome suddenly and at the same time. This causes Ruka, Misaki, and Madoka to return to the island to try and get answers. Madoka mentions that they should've waited for Ruka, and also makes mention in her journals that Ruka plays music for them, implying that the girls remained friends and in touch after their ordeal.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences: 1. Ruka is dedicated and driven. As a child she studied piano and this continued well into her adulthood. She is studious and hard-working, practicing and honing her skills. It brings her peace and also brings her closer to her lost memories, as well as being a source of peace for the others. Madoka talks about Ruka playing for them often, which implies Ruka keeps touch with them and cares about their well-being. Even despite her mother making her promise to never return to the island, Ruka returns anyhow to help her friends--and herself--with recovering the truth of what happened there in the hopes of saving themselves and each other.

It's this dedication to her craft and to her friends and family that helps save them in the end. Ruka is able to remember most of the lunar melody and her ability to read music helps her put together the rest of the song needed to "calm the moon" and clear the Moonlight Syndrome.

2. Ruka is also shown to be very caring and kind, even from a young age. She constantly worries about her father working so hard, and even as an adult she worries about his spirit and what happened to him. Instead of being angry and upset with how he treated her and caused her to develop Moonlight Syndrome in the first place, she's more concerned with figuring out why he was doing all this and what his thoughts were.
(2+) Negative Experiences: 1. Ruka is curious to a fault. While it's natural to be curious and inquisitive about some things, Ruka can't leave well enough alone. Once she gets it in her head to figure something out, she'll stop at nothing to see it through the end. While in away this is a good thing, it's also what led her to returning to the dangerous island of her childhood. Her mother's pleas forbidding her from going back weren't enough for her to quit.

Also thanks to her father and to the Moonlight Syndrome, Ruka is wary of things like masks, mirrors, and the moon. She also likely has some unease with hospitals and the like, but generally, despite having the daylights scared out of her at every turn, she's learned to manage her fear quietly. Mostly so she doesn't attract unwanted attention from other ghosts.

• Canon Powers: Ruka is able to see spirits, but that's about all. Without her Camera Obscura she doesn't appear capable of exorcising them or anything like that.

• Blessed Day: September 17th. This is the day Ruka was kidnapped and the Kagura she was forced to take part in failed, causing her to lose her memory entirely

• Blood Power Manifestation: I'd like to play more w/Ruka's connection with the moon and using music to do things. It's shown in canon that wearing masks means on can inherit the skills of what the mask is to represent-- for instance, someone who's never play flute before able to play a particular song flawlessly upon putting a mask on.

I think for powers I'd have her being able to hear one's 'moonsound'-- a 'moonsound' is a particular note or sound that everyone has. Some might be louder or quiet than others, but it's always the same sound. When it becomes disturbed, it leads to a 'lose of self' (aka Moonlight Syndrome) and people become stronger when their moonsounds are brought together. Ruka can't really do much with this, she can just sort of tell how someone's generally doing by how their sound, uh, sounds.

Using a musical instrument, Ruka can play a song that'll help soothe, and help people with their memories. Namely, remembering things they could previously or returning lost memories.
