CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Ruka Minazuki
Canon: Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Canon point: Phase IX: Descent, when she enters her family home
Age: 17
Personality: Please answer the following questions:
» What traits do your character admire in a person?
Ruka admires people who are blunt and honest, those that are straight-forward and don't mince words. Ruka isn't much of a leader, even if the others in her group might look to her for the calm to Misaki's rougher leadership. Madoka mentions that she wished they'd waited for Ruka to arrive to the island before doing their investigations, though Misaki is content to go drag Madoka with her.
Ruka is the calm and even-tempered one, so she can't help but admire those that throw that expectation away. She only has one passion, which is piano, and with the loss of her memory she doesn't seem to show much emotion at all. Those that are openly passionate about things and wear their hearts of their sleeves are people she's drawn to.
» What do they dislike most about themself?
Passivity. Ruka isn't much of a doer, usually, which is why it took her so long to actually return to the island of her home. Her mother had forbade it, and it wasn't until some years after her death, and after the death of two of Ruka's friends, that she decided to return. Likely she'll always wonder if she could've done more if she'd just gone back earlier, or asked more questions, etc. But in the end Ruka is someone who just allows things to happen to her, regarding it all with a detached air of curiosity.
» What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?
Ruka sees herself as boring and not quite 'whole.' This is largely due to the fact that her Moonlight Syndrome has returned, which is 'eating' at her soul and her memories. She doesn't think she's anything special, just quietly drifting through life, but Ruka hides a driven, caring, and compassionate soul underneath the layers she-- and others have-- built to protect her fragile state of memory. Despite the worry that remembering her past would cause her to 'Bloom' (in terms used for her illness) and die or go insane, she's stronger than she thinks and can overcome this. She feels deeply even if she won't show it outwardly, and is stubborn and selfless, willing to sacrifice everything to keep Sayaka from using the moon as a mirror to infect the world with Moonlight Syndrome.
» Who are two influential people in their life (can be positive or negative)?
1. Soya Yomotsuki. Ruka's father who was a mask-maker. Ruka loved him dearly and always wanted to play with him/spend time with him, but Soya began to neglect and ignore Ruka as he became more and more obsessed with making the perfect mask. He would force Ruka to wear masks, which scared her and caused her to feel like she was being possessed. She very rarely ever saw her father's face mask-less, and he caused her to develop the Moonlight Syndrome.
2. Yo Haibara: The son of the director of the hospital Ruka was in. Yo wanted to attempt the Rite of Descent using his sister as the main dancer. To do so, he needed 5 young girls to act as the instrumentalists. He kidnapped these girls to make them do the ritual; Ruka was among them. When the ritual failed, all of the girls passed out and had their memories erased. This forever changed Ruka, as she couldn't recall anything of her past.
» What do they get excited about?
Music! One of the only things that remained in Ruka's memory is her love and passion for piano. Her friends' notes mention that she'd play for them often, and she's been keeping up her practice since she was a little girl.
» What is something they are very bad at?
Giving up, much to her own chagrin. Ruka knows that regaining her memory could kill her, or drive her insane, or rocket her Moonlight Syndrome into hyperdrive which would, incidentally, also drive her insane and then kill her. However, she keeps going. Even when being hounded by spirits and haunting memories alike, she just. Keeps. Going.
» What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance?
She'd probably tell her younger self that there will be a time where she's lost everyone and it'll be hard to carry on, but that she must, and that she must,/i> remember the Lunar Melody. She'd likely write the notes down for her to keep safe.
» How do they want to be remembered?
She doesn't want nor care to be remembered personally, so long as her deeds are. She wants people to know that her island is safe now, that people can go back home if they wanted, and, most importantly, to burn every instance of the making of the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse to stop anyone from trying to make it again ffs.
Powers/abilities: Ruka is able to see spirits, and exorcise them with the Camera Obscura. As a descendent of the Tsukimori Maidens, her music has the ability to soothe agitation and in particular the Moonsong, which at this time she can only remember snippets of, can help trigger lost or buried memories in people.
By playing the moonsong, Ruka can also guide lost spirits back to the afterlife, calm people and spirits, and bring clarity.
Every person has their own unique 'sound' which Ruka is able to hear with some practice. She can learn to recognize people based on their soul's 'sound' so even if they're in disguise she'd know who they are.
Inventory: 1. Camera Obscura
2. Her notebook
Sentimental item: The Mask of the Lunar Vessel (not to be confused with the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse!)
Gemstone: A yellow (primary) and black (secondary) gem, that's shaped like a small lotus flower. It's polished and gleams brightly.
Lost memory #1: Sooo Ruka actually starts her game canonly having no memories of her past. Upon arrival, I'd like her to lose some of the memories she worked to regain in the first place. 1st, forgetting her friends. To go with the altered memory, Ruka would forget that she was part of the kidnapped girls. She knows she lost her memory due to the ritual gone wrong, but she will have no memory of being kidnapped for it, nor the aftermath of being found in the well.
Lost memory #2: Ruka will forget about her father and the fact he was a mask maker. Her father is the one that used to obsessively make masks and force them onto Ruka, causing her gradual mental decline and lose memory and sense of self. Ruka already can't remember what his face looks like --as she only ever saw him with a mask--but with this Ruka will forget him entirely. She'll forget he ever had a hand in making ehr develop Moonlight Syndrome.
Altered memory: Instead of thinking herself one of the kidnapped girls, I'd like Ruka's altered memory to be that she as instead the dancer. Instead of being forced to participate in the ritual as one of the girls playing an instrument, Ruka will believe she was the dancer, the Vessel, that failed in the ritual and allowed the mask to break, eventually causing the Second Day Of Tranquility. She believes herself responsible for the massacre on her island and believes she's trying to regain her memories to learn the right song/dance combination to do the ritual the correct way and cure the Moonlight Syndrome illness.
